Steve Moakley is a photographer and multimedia journalist based in Austin, Texas. He is a staff photo editor at the Texas House of Representatives in addition to working for numerous freelance clients. Steve’s background in documentary photography drives his purpose to use storytelling as a process to benefit and enhance humanitarian causes. He has worked with refugees from the central African wars in South Africa and extensively within the Austin refugee community. His 2014 collaboration with the MRC New Leaf Agriculture Program became the photography exhibit, “Our Piece of Earth’, a fundraising event that helped raise awareness for the program and honored the hard work of the refugee gardeners. Steve strongly believes in finding the human elements of a story that resonate across cultures, thus bridging the divides created by different societies and amplifying the characteristics that unite us as human beings. Steve has a degree in history from the University of Oklahoma and has given special study to the conflicts of Sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia. He has also studied the role of photojournalism in promoting awareness of ongoing tragedies in an age of instant communication and media saturation.
