About Refugees

According to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services refugees are persons living outside their country of origin who cannot return to their homes due to fear of persecution based on their race, religion, or membership in a particular social/political group.  Texas receives between 3,500-4,000 refugees per year, and the refugees generally resettle in one of eight Texas communities:  Amarillo, Austin, Abilene, Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston, San Antonio and El Paso. (Texas Health and Human Services Commission Refugee Program. Refugee Program Overview 2007).  Since 2007 large numbers of refugees have been resettled from Burundi, Congo Brazzaville, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Cuba, Iran, Iraq, Liberia, Myanmar (Burma), Somalia and Vietnam.  In addition, a large number of refugees from Bhutan are expected in 2009.
