Paul Tiah
Co-founder and Program Committee Chair

Paul was born in 1970 in Zodru, Liberia into a large family of 13 brothers and sisters.  He attended high school in Monrovia but was forced to flee to Sierra Leone due to the Liberian Civil War.  At a refugee camp in Sierra Leone, Paul became actively involved in the relief process by distributing relief items and learning skills such as soap making in which he could help provide a resource and make a living.

Paul returned to Monrovia in 1995 where he married his wife Dorcas.   Due to continued unrest, they fled again in 1997 to a refugee camp in Ivory Coast.   Here, Paul and his in-laws led an effort to help single mothers build shelters which otherwise would have been very difficult for the women to do.  Paul attended technical school with a focus on road maintenance but was unable to work in this field due to the lack of job opportunities.  In order to make a living and provide another resource for the camp, Paul used his soap- making skills to produce and sell soap.

In 2003, Paul and his family were granted refugee status and moved to Austin, Texas where Paul continues to be active in community building.  Paul is a member at Westlake Hills Presbyterian Church where he is a deacon and started a ministry to help refugees.   He is the chaplain of the Liberian Association of Austin and a founder of the African Society of Austin.
