Laura Kaplan is a gender and development specialist who has dedicated her career to promoting women’s economic empowerment around the world. Before moving to Austin and joining MRC as our Sewing Program Manager, she worked for international non-profit organizations in Washington, DC for more than eight years. She is currently a Study Abroad Program Coordinator at the University of Texas.
As a Program Officer at Women for Women International, Laura managed business partnerships with major US retailers Kate Spade New York and Anthropologie. These programs employed more than 500 women in Bosnia, Rwanda, and Afghanistan in handcraft production. She also traveled to Bosnia, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo to launch economic development programs for women in knitting and sewing. She has an M.A. in International Development with a focus on gender and development from George Washington University, and a B.A. in International Relations and Public Communication from American University.
